I think this organisation will be one of the big players of the future in the PHP world.

How to install PHP and MySQL the easy way!

I have set up PHP using IIS and know some of the headaches that can occur. But PHP was never initially designed to work on IIS, that was a later edition. PHP was actually designed to work on Apache!

The solution to this is to use something that installs PHP, MySQL and Apache together and gives you control over all three. The answer to this is XAMMP which is a Apache distrubution containing MySQL and PHP.

Installation steps

  1. Download the XAMMP version free for your operating system, currently there are versions for Linux, Windows, MAC OS X and Solaris.
  2. Run the installer
  3. You might need to stop any service that uses ports 80 or 443 like IIS as Apache needs to use this.
  4. Open up the XAMPP control panel and make sure the Apache and MySQL services are running.

The root of localhost is the htdocs directory under where you installed XAMMP. So if you installed XAMPP in C:xampp then C:xampphtdocstest.php would resolve to http://localhost/test.php

Create a simple PHP page to test your installation.
